Marijuana is strongly used around the world and with its continued use strikes the argument that it should be legalized in the world we live in today. It is believed that the long-term use of Marijuana can have a negative harmful effect on a person. It is believed and not surprisingly, marijuana intoxication can cause distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, and problems with learning and memory. Research has shown that marijuana’s adverse impact on learning and memory can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off. However, this may only be the effect of some of its heavy users. Since there are no deaths related to the illicit use of such drugs, people don't think it could be so bad.

Although the direct use of marijuana may seem OK, the effect of being intoxicated from the drug may strike the argument; maybe a motorist has a loss of perception due to marijuana, which caused an accident. But you’re going to tell me that the use of alcohol doesn’t have a more deadly and dangerous affect with around 17,000 deaths per year. Alcohol related car crashes kill someone every 30 minutes and injure someone every 2 minutes, as marijuana has a 0 death rate.

Marijuana in some cases is used medically to treat patients with severe illness and/or eating disabilities. Cancer patients are prescribed with the drug to help endure the pain of chemotherapy, as others use it to help give them an appetite. It is also used to relax ones nerves, too calm them down. Marijuana is currently illegal, but if it becomes legalized, it would definitely serve a better purpose than it's used today.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, in 2007, 14.4 million Americans aged 12 or older used marijuana at least once in the month prior to being surveyed, which is similar to the 2006 rate. About 6,000 people a day in 2007-used marijuana for the first time—2.1 million Americans. Of these, 62.2 percent were under age 18. We can conclude here that the use of Marijuana is widely spread and its use will continue to grow. If the drug became legal the government would be able to charge a tax and I think the economy would greatly benefit from this, primarily because the use of the drug use will continue to grow. As hard as the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) tries to cut down on the sales of such drugs, there will always be more. Even kids in middle school could get their hands on it. Just by walking down the street in bad neighborhoods one may find a man on the street selling the drug. It’s NOT that hard.

As one uses the substance more often, they tend to believe that they are not addicted to its use and that they can stop whenever they want. The question is when do you stop. A number of people that I have encountered in my life have told me they have had a continued use of the substance, and they are still the same successful people that they are, my little experiment. The use of the drug has had no apparent physical affect on there bodies. Many of these people I know who smoke have told me they had been smoking daily for 9 years. Still the same person as they were before. No alterations to their personality at all and just something used for personal pleasure and maybe to help one get through a hard rough day at the office. Remember, there has never been a death related or caused by the direct use of the drug. I believe it was put on this earth for a reason otherwise it wouldn't be here. Everything in it's own way serves a purpose. Many of use dislike the creation of honeybees, but without them we would have no honey. Wouldn't that not be so sweet...

Napoleon used the substance as a military advantage. His troops were using the drug and as a result, were able to basically be superhuman. Battling off different climates, and being able to walk through different types of terrain with no problem. They seemed to be invincible. They were just given this external power somehow, and this was primarily due to the use of cannabis, known as marijuana.

Marijuana has been around for quite a while, with it being popular and well known, this drug will continue to be used for medicines and other uses of the drug may never end. In California it’s already making way to legalizing the drug. In California there is no state regulation or standard of the cultivation and/or distribution of medical marijuana. For example, Sonoma County permits possession of three pounds of marijuana and allows cultivation of 99 plants. In Marin County they allow up to 6 mature plants. One can easily obtain a medical card allowing the permitted sales of the substance to those whom “need” it medically, for whatever the reason may be.

Even when anti drug campaigns kicked in making the substance illegal, and even after burning a whole lot of the drug in NYC back in the 70’s, it's use is still widely spread and doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon. Nor can it be stopped!!! As illegal as it is today, the availability to obtain it and use it recreationally is at an even greater high than all time. Make it Legal!

New Literacy

Literacy is heading in a new direction. It is believed to be that, but it is said that new technology is being a factor with kids being able to write. Essays have been replaced by power point and facebook sort of things. Andrea Lunsford, a professor of writing and rhetoric at Stanford University set up the Stanford Study of Writing and found kids are writing far more than generations before them.

Before the internet came along it was found that people never really wrote something unless it was a school assignment, or a job requiring you to produce text. In a way the internet is good. Writing for a larger kind of audience is another example. Writers have there work read by large amounts of people and it is believed that online media is heading in a cool direction.

I think Internet use really could be to our advantage. We can access vital information at the convenience of a push of a button. Able to read just about anything with an easy search. There is also a broader audience and more ideas can be shared in a good well manor.

R U Really Reading?

The article "R U Really Reading" raises a few good points. Is the internet era the same or even better than one with only just plain traditional texts. Most kids nowadays choose the internet more than reading books. That doesn't necessarily mean there not reading but it is believed that there may be shorter attention spans due to the continued use of internet. Recent study shows the use of internet in kids is no at 1 hour and 44 minutes in 2004 as apposed to just 45 minutes in 1999. Is the increase good or bad? I believe it to be just "the way of the future." I find internet as a gateway to the world, with everything right at your finger tips, use it the right way and you may learn a thing or two. If you just log on to your computer and use things such as instant messenger all the time, that has minimal reading comprehension involved and you wont really gain much from doing so. However, “What we are losing in this country and presumably around the world is the sustained, focused, linear attention developed by reading. Ones mind can be all over the place on the internet, choosing certain parts of an article to read as apposed to a full beginning middle and end of a book. Books bring a reader into a whole knew light sharing personal views and seeing the world from a whole new perspective, as internet uses blogs and such to broaden the mind of the reader but not exactly shed new light... I know less kids choose books than adults, but hey you never know what to expect in this kind of world we live in today!

“New Media and the Slow Death of the Written Word”

In the “New Media and the Slow Death of the Written Word”, we see that the author advocates old text and even admits to wanting to advocate “print on paper rather than computers” at first but then eventually realized that these old texts had some issues that needed to be resolved. So, even though he still loves the old text, he realized that the New Media had a new way of communicating with his audience, as Birkert and Postman, opponents who believed that New Media would be taking away appreciation of old text, had to realize.

Technology in the 21st century has greatly influenced the ways in which we work and communicate in our everyday lives. Whether it is seen by the increase in use of computers or the decline of the interestingness of the newspaper, we have now entered an era where the “New Media” has prevailed and for those who need to adapt to this change, there are rules that can be adhered to for a better transition into this computer-ruled time period. The New Media has made it possible to not only enhance but also appreciate old texts. To allow this connection to even happen, Mark Zeltner developed ten basic rules, using what he learned through experience, to serve as a guide for students learning to write for the new-media.

Rule number one and two both compliment each other in that number one states that in writing online , writers should stick to cold hard facts and not digress into lengthy explanations which is going to draw the reader away. Rule number two helps the write control the amount which is being written by making the text only being about a screenful and no more. I agree with both rules because the whole attraction of the internet is not to read long lengthy paragraphs and to just get the facts desired ,fast. Rule number three falls into the same category as one and two do, to keep it short and sweet. He expresses that you should still create an outline for your work , but to rule out the information that is unnecessary. I agree in the sense that you should keep some tactics that are used in writing printed texts into new media but just more modified and shorter.

Rules number four details that adding pictures can further help explain what you are writing about and help the reader further understand. Rule number five is about adding audio to the text so that certain sayings aren't interpreted wrongfully. Rule number six consists of attaching videos to an article as he explained with the John F. Kennedy video that some words can't quite explain a certain topic without having to experiencing it for yourself. Although Zeltner makes it clear that the pictures, audio and video should be relevant to the text and should be put there to enhance the reader's experience and help the reader understand better rather than to distract the reader. I agree with these rules because if there is an example of a speech that was made or a painting or a speech in the text and i have never heard of it then i would have to google it. It saves a lot of time for the reader and it gives your eyes a break from reading even though the text shouldn't be long regardless if the writer followed rules one through three.

Rule number seven deals with hyperlinks which is a link that take you to the definition of words and for footnotes that are in the article. Rule number eight includes adding in hyperlinks to other pages of the same topic but to add them on the bottom , that way when the reader is done they can go to the other pages instead of putting the link in the middle of the page and then losing your read to another site.Rule number nine states that the writer should add sidebars with additional information about the topic being addressed and the main function of the sidebar is to redirect the reader to the main article. I don't agree with these three rules as much because if your trying to convert paper readers to the internet all of the extra links can get confusing, the only rule I would keep out of these three would be the side bar just because it redirects you back to the main page so that the readers doesn't venture off to other sites.

The last rule , rule number ten is the most important because it explains how to properly use all of the previous rules like where the necessary rules should be applied and how. I agree with this rule the most because even if you have the right tools, but you don't know how to use them , then they become useless.

Overall I agree with all of the rules. Zeltner devised a well organized format for any new New Media writers to follow if they are trying to transition from paper writing to the computer. I can't think of any other rule that should be added since he covered most of the desirable features the internet has to offer. In Zeltner's conclusion he expresses that the written word is not dying but it's modernized and being used in ways it hasn't before. Also that isn't not destroying the future generation's potential to understand and read lengthy articles. Technology is constantly advancing which to some equals the death of the written word , but I believe it's the birth of a new way of writing

Video Games may enhance ones maximum brain capacity and knowledge. Recent studies show, video games have a more positive than negative affect on the brain itself. More games have been created especially ones intended for use of children. New and improved baby toys are getting us humans to learn more quickly than others. Little babies are playing with toy cell phones, learning and now able to function a telephone at a way earlier age than expected.

In the article, "The Internet is No Substitute for the Dying Newspaper Industry" talks about a world where information is conveyed primarily through rapidly moving images rather than print. The decline of newspapers is about the rise of the corporate state, the loss of civic and responsibility to inform the public. Newspaper stocks have decreased drastically. More people have been using internet to find there vital information, which includes the majority of bloggers and internet addicts. I have to agree as i see the use of the internet used for almost everything.

The article "Is google making us stupid?", the article discusses how we have become more depended on google as our prime source of search engine we forgot how to use other things to help us gain information, we rely solely on the internet now for any piece of information. Hal had believed that the past few years he had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with his brain, remapping the neural circuitry, reprogramming the memory. His attention had gone, he cannot focus his attention on his readings any longer. The need of using the internet has become embedded in his brain and cannot continuously keep his eyes on the print. The use of internet reading has had few people sparking the question, is it holding you back as some have stopped reading books completely. Well I have issues reading so maybe that is the cause..

Both similar in that the use of internet to find out information is used rather than traditional ways of the newspaper. Quicker more timely information coming from the internet with the click of a button, you can access so much on the internet. Unfortunately the decrease in newspaper stocks continues to fall and the internet just isn't good enough to keep them in the game. As well as the fact that many pieces on the internet can be completely opinion pieces.

The Onion

Few "fake" articles drew my attention. First funny article was the Walletless Biden Found Handcuffed To Bedpost. Special agents were responding to a distress call where they found Biden chained to a bed, spread-eagle, with a pair of cutoff denim shorts around his ankles. He also appeared to have lost his wallet with a lucky two-dollar bill, a Sizzler gift card, and a Federal Bikini Inspector badge. Theres no way that was true, why would the vice president carry a Federal Bikin Inspector badge..(hmmm)
Better yet the article -British Royal Family Concerned After Queen Elizabeth II Beheads 7 Tourists was found to be pretty funny. Apparently the Queen ordered guards to decapitate seven tourists having their picture taken outside Buckingham Palace. She also has been up to no good. Staying up late nights..and turning lights on and off, trying to disband Parliament. haha thats funny. As well as putting aluminum foil in the microwave..crazy lady, i suggest a psychiatrist.

NEW YORK- Police Blotter: Merrick. Sept. 23rd. 8PM. 3 males reportedly accused of cutting of eachothers privates for the purpose of selling them on Ebay. Reports of a shanck knife were used along with a swiss army knife.. 2 out of the 3 males were rushed to the hospital as to the where abouts of the 3rd male, still remains unknown, however if you see privates for sale on eBay you will have found your man.

Leaving the car with no way of stopping without gravity itself. The car was airbourne before meeting it's maker,the tree. They both with adrenaline were able to make it out through the back door of the vehicle(even with possible injury). The car automatically dialed 911 upon impact, and firefighters and police officers responded immediately. The Two Victim's were rushed to a hospital only obtaining minor physical injuries. Passenger was reported with a fractured back, and the driver was reported to have a broken right ankle. The two teenagers were granted their lives, as to the cars existence, well it no longer exists today. The use of any drug related substance was ruled out by the police on the scene. This wasn't the first time the front left axel of this 2008 BMW 328i was broken off, sparking the question as to what exactly was the problem?

Michael Skube expresses his thoughts and ideas about the world of blogging, In his article written in the Los Angeles Times. Refering to it as “the loudest corner of the Internet.” With points about out how years ago people would only write for money and never as a mere hobby for no profit. In our day and age there are several blogs out there on the Internet and very few of them are making a profit. He points out a distinct difference between bloggers and journalists. Bloggers reject the title “journalist”, saying that they are dedicated to the greater population, making blogging focus more on democratization. They basically have all the liberties that traditional journalists have, but few of the obligations. Although blogging is a quick and easy way to get information out, important stories require more than this. They require much more time and effort. They require thorough fact-sifting and straight-forward facts. Blogs are very important, but what really sends a clear message is the kind of investigation and delving into the situation that reporters and traditional journalists take the time to do.Through examining this article in comparison to Andrew Sullivan’s, one can understand the importance in blogging. Both show how blogging gives readers the same information they would receive from newspapers and magazines, yet in a faster and cheaper way. Sullivan emphasizes how blogging is the beginning of a “publishing revolution.” Blogging is much more personal and easy to relate to. People are realizing that those writers for magazines are no more trustworthy than any random blogger. Another idea he points out is that blogging can create a profit. What is going to happen when people around the world only stick to reading blogs rather than going out and buying a newspaper or watching the news on television? Slowly but surely, the world of media and publishing is beginning to change; and who knows what the result will be.Although Sullivan’s statement about the relatable aspect of blogging is true, I don’t completely agree that the validity of blogs are equal to that of traditional journalism. I believe that Skube is correct in saying that important stories require more effort and investigation than bloggers are willing to contribute. So although blogs are more easily relatable and interesting opinions, in order to get 100% valid facts, we still need the newspapers and television news.

Lawrence Idea

I grew up all my life in a town located just 10 minutes from JFK called Lawrence. The Village of Lawrence is a town with a lot of history and property tax which is sky high. Just outside my home is where you can find your activity.

The Lawrence country club provides you with a full 18 hole golf coarse and several tennis courts in which you can enjoy being youself at. Membership available for purchase to any member of the community.

If your looking for a place to blaze with minimal police activity, heres your place. If your driving in one direction and see a police car heading the opposite direction, you can probably kill 9 people rob a bank and still have no problem with the police. I know first hand because at any hour of the day im probably cruising around town hitting an L bc y not! Got pulled over once for a running stop sign, thats it. Probably going to hire a hitman for the officer anyways(clearly kidding-or am i?) but have to be in court september 22nd.

Alot of rich Jewish families have homes in this neighborhood. I myself am Jewish and Attended a Jewish Private school one town over in Cedarhurst all of my life called HAFTR(Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway). Sickest school, didnt do shit. Tuition being $20,000 a year, i dont give a shitttttt, never went to class. The teachers are retarded and you basically can do whatever you can imagine. In our school hockey is a tradition and we are ussually known to be the best. I played hockey all 4 years of high school and left with two championships. One in 10th and once again as a senior and the kids 1 year younger than me are going for 4 years in a row.




















If you think being high has any effect on your performance you are wrong. In fact I may have showed up stoned to every single game. I started a game(against the worst team) drunk and high and I managed to score a goal in 6 seconds, outstanding right?? My grade was all about the FRANKS(which we say is all the "good times") Therefore making fun of the janitors for stealing all our shit.. thats a FRANK. Going to school for two weeks straight with a mustache also a FRANK, except no girl want to talk to you.

Aside from my personal "schooling" experience Lawrence is one of the finest well known neighborhoods there is. Most homes have there own acres of land. Driveways that deserve there own zip code and of coarse just nearby is the Marina where you can take out your boat or jetskis.
Town, "central avenue" has basically anything you need from food to home entertainment and clothing. If you make a right turn out of my block and continue on a 5 minute driving journey you can find yourself at anything you need. Rockaway Turnpike has just about everything, like a mall, dunkin donuts, costco, 7 11, wendies, t-bell, mcdonalds, office max, hollywood video,gas stations, tabacco road, famous sherwood diner, batting cages, starbucks and anything else you may need.

The Lawrence Cedarhurst Volunteer fire department has a long history behind it. Until the 1970's, there was little need for a fire fighting company in Lawrence. Poor roads hindered vehicles, and since the homes were so far apart, there was little fear that a fire in one house would spread to another. With the completion of the Long Island Railroad to Far Rockaway and the resultant population and building expansion, homes were built closer to one another and the fire hazard soon became a concern to the community.


In the late 1870s, some neighbors got together and provided buckets in convienant places for a fire emergency. However one cold night in 1882, when the church bells sounded the fire alarm, no one responded to the call and several buildings were gutted. Shortly thereafter, a group assembled to form the Washington avenue Hook and Ladder Company #1. In July, 1883, a fire truck fitted with hooks, ladders, and buckets was purchased for $415. After the years and more fires emerged it called for better equipment and progress. They aquired a new horse-drawn steam pumper and 1,000 feet of hose, and new property bought for $1,200. Soon took the sanction of both villages of Lawrence and Cedarhurst. Stores had been planned on the side of the building to bring in profit. By 1915 the fire department started changing to motorized vehicles. And of coarse finds itself as a great fire company with all of the top equipment needed in this modern world today.
